Willmar – 30 Hours of Classroom Education
How do we get a learner’s permit for our teenager?
In Minnesota we use a Graduated Driver’s Licensing system (GDL). The GDL eases young drivers into the driving environment. Step one is to obtain the learner’s permit.
Teens younger than 18 years of age are required to attend 30 hours of classroom education prior to taking the written knowledge test. We offer classes in many locations, including Willmar, throughout the year. Please visit our schedule page to find a location near you that fits into your busy schedule.
Through the use of a variety of classroom materials each student learns how to become a safe driver. Lessons are presented using movies, lecture, chapter review and discussion, worksheets, tests, quizzes and fun classroom activities.

Willmar – 6 Hours of Behind the Wheel Instruction

Your teen will need to complete 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction with one of our licensed instructors before they take the road test to receive their license.
Your scheduled drives can happen anytime between the time they receive their permit and the time that they take the road test. We ask that your teen drive with you for a minimum of 10 hours prior to taking their first behind the wheel session. This allows you to receive the maximum amount of value from our instruction.
Home pick-up and drop-off is one of the benefits of attending Today’s Driving School for your driver’s education needs in Willmar. If your home doesn’t work, we can also pick-up and drop-off at other locations like school, work or a grandparent’s home.
Your teen will drive for a full two hours with an instructor. As they drive in Willmar and other nearby communities, the instructor will be introducing your teen to the finer details of safe driving.
Our instructors follow lesson plans that allow your student to experience first hand as many driving situations as possible. Through the use of our driver evaluation sheets you will see what skills have been practiced and receive feedback from our instructors via written notes and skill ratings.
Please make sure to bring the evaluation sheet along to each behind the wheel lesson. This is how we keep track of performance and which skills have been practiced.

How Do We Find Time For All Of This!
We have structured our classroom education to help you integrate with your families busy schedule.
Your teen must attend 30 hours of classroom education in order to receive their “blue card” or certificate of completion. If they miss a day of class, no problem! Missed days of classroom instruction can be made up at any of the other locations we teach. For example: If they miss day 6 they can attend day 6 anywhere we have classes.
